After Dermal Fillers – The Do’s and Don’ts of Aftercare for Dermal Fillers

After dermal fillers – After getting fillers or Botox, it’s essential that you follow the proper aftercare protocol in order to help your procedure heal properly and ensure you get the desired effects from the treatment. But if you don’t know what those steps are, or how long you should wait between them, it can be difficult to navigate this process on your own. So, to help clear things up, here are the do’s and don’ts of aftercare for dermal fillers.

After Dermal Fillers – DO Cleanse Your Skin

It is important to cleanse your skin before applying makeup or going to bed. In order to do so, you can use water, soap, or a gentle cleanser with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. DO make sure to keep up with your daily skincare routine: moisturize and apply sunscreen every morning.

DO Apply Sunscreen

After dermal fillers – Sunscreen should be applied to the treated area as soon as possible after treatment to protect the skin from sun damage. The more time that elapses between a treatment and sunscreen application, the less effective it will be. Apply a broad spectrum SPF 30 or greater with good UVA/UVB protection. Let it absorb into your skin before going outside in order to avoid staining clothing, hair, or skin with white residue.

DO Sleep On Your Back

Do try to avoid drinking alcohol, smoking, or using any other substances that may cause side effects such as dryness or swelling. If you must drink alcohol, do so in moderation. You should also consult your doctor before taking any prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, or supplements. You should not use a hot tub, sauna, steam room, sun tanning bed/booth or solarium during the six months after filler treatment. It is important to follow these rules because too much exposure can worsen your results!

DON’T Workout

After dermal fillers – After getting a dermal filler, it is important to know the do’s and don’ts to avoid any unwanted side effects. It is recommended that you do not workout or exercise vigorously, as this will cause increased bruising, bleeding and pain. Additionally, you should avoid bending over at the waist as this can lead to leakage from the site which can cause hematoma or infection. You should also be sure to use cold packs on your face before going out in public because they have been shown to reduce redness. Lastly, it is important to keep makeup away from the injection sites.

DON’T Drink Alcohol

It is important to avoid any activities that could cause bleeding. Alcohol in particular can increase the risk of bleeding, so avoid drinking alcohol after your procedure. This is especially true if you have had a procedure done on your lips because alcohol will dry them out and make them more prone to cracking or infection.

DON’T Smoke

Smokers are at an increased risk for developing skin cancer and should therefore refrain from smoking after their dermal filler treatment. If you are unable to abstain from smoking, try chewing gum instead since this increases salivary production which helps protect against infections. Drinking plenty of water will also keep your skin hydrated by flushing out toxins from the body and by keeping it moisturized by providing moisture.

DON’T Touch Your Face

DON’T go out into the sun. UV rays may cause damage to your skin, which is not something you want if you just had dermal fillers injected. DON’T use makeup or heavy creams on your face right away. Your skin needs time to heal before using these products. DON’T pick at any scabs that might form as a result of filler injections
